The many firsts of President Jonathan

In his inauguration speech as president on May 6, 2010, following the death of President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, President Goodluck Jonathan had promised to reform the electoral process, and he went about it by appointing a respected university teacher and activist, Attahiru Jega, a professor of political science, as the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Jega would go on to organise five governorship elections between 2011 and 2014. Jonathan’s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lost all but one of those elections.

Jonathan’s defeat in the presidential poll on March 28 was the climax — or the anti-climax. But he would leave on May 29 with his head raised high. Although he is the first sitting president of Nigeria to lose an election, that should not becloud the fact that he has also scored a series of firsts in the annals of the country’s politics. He has been widely commended for accepting defeat — as he had promised before the election — but of more significance, perhaps, is that he has considerably reformed the electoral system such that he became the ultimate “victim” of the transparency.

Here are some of his “firsts”.

First ‘all-in-one’ political office holder

Jonathan was elected deputy governor of Bayelsa state in 1999 and re-elected in 2003. In 2005, he became governor when DSP Alamieyeseigha was impeached, and was elected vice-president in 2007. Jonathan became acting president in February 2010 when President Yar’Adua took terminally ill, and was confirmed substantive president in May of the same year when Yar’Adua died. He was then elected president in 2011. In sum, Jonathan has been deputy governor, governor, vice-president, acting president and president. No single Nigerian, living or dead, has held all these positions. And it is unlikely there will be such again.

First Acting President

When President Yar’Adua took ill and travelled to Saudi Arabia for treatment in 2009, Jonathan, as vice-president, was not constitutionally empowered to act in his absence. The legal logjam took a lot of deftness to resolve, and the national assembly eventually adopted a “doctrine of necessity” — the first in Nigeria’s legislative history — to proclaim him acting president. That was the first time a vice-president was made acting president by the national assembly. It was a unique piece of history, as nobody ever reckoned that there would one day be such a position as acting president.

First PhD holder to be president

When President Yar’Adua won the 2007 election, he became the first university graduate to be Nigerian head of state. Interestingly, too, his deputy holds a PhD in Zoology. It was a rare combination — a master’s degree holder in charge, assisted by a doctor of philosophy. Both of them science-based! Yar’Adau soon died and Jonathan became the first PhD holder to be president following his inauguration on May 6, 2010. He was elected for his own first term in 2011, becoming the first PhD holder to win a presidential election.

First Southern minority to be president

While northern ethnic minorities had produced heads of state before, their southern counterparts had not enjoyed that privilege. The Igbo had produced a ceremonial president in Nnamdi Azikiwe, while Ernest Shonekan and Olusegun Obasanjo, both Yorubas, had also headed government in one or two forms. But the Niger Delta, which produced Nigeria’s wealth, was never really in the equation. Jonathan holds the distinction of being the first president from the oil-producing region — and it will obviously take some time to have another.

First executive president without elections

Nobody ever became a civilian chief executive of Nigeria without going through an election. From Tafawa Balewa in 1960 and Shehu Shagari in 1979 to Obasanjo in 1999 and Yar’Adua in 2007, they all went through elections to occupy the exalted office. However, Jonathan did not go through any election to become president in 2010. He was promoted after the death of Yar’Adua, and he assumed full executive powers. Even as acting president between February and May same year, he was already exercising those powers, but only became substantive after Yar’Adua’s death.

First VP to be president

No vice-president had been president of Nigeria until Jonathan. In the first republic, Nigeria ran a parliamentary system of government with the prime minister being the head of government. That government was overthrown. Nigeria has been operating the  presidential system since 1979, but no VP had managed to become president until 2010 when Jonathan did — after the death of Yar’Adua. Obasanjo, however, was next in hierarchy to Murtala Muhammed in 1975-76 in a military government, and he replaced Muhammed after he was killed in an abortive coup. Obasanjo and Jonathan, for once, share something in common.

First presidential candidate to accept defeat immediately

Jonathan will go down in history as the first major presidential candidate in Nigeria to accept defeat while results were still being announced. He had promised to do so if he lost, and there were fears that he might not fulfill his promise because of protests over the 4 million votes recorded by his opponent, Muhammadu Buhari, in Kaduna, Kano and Katsina states. But he kept his promise. In 1979, Awolowo did not accept defeat immediately, but he lost his legal battle. In 1983, he did not even go to court again, saying he had given up. In 1993, the presidential election was annulled, so it won’t count. The NRC candidate, Bashir Tofa, had congratulated SDP’s MKO Abiola, but he soon withdrew his felicitations when crisis ensued. In 1999, Olu Falae went to court and only congratulated Obasanjo after losing at the appeal court. Then in 2003, 2007 and 2011, Buhari never congratulated the winners.

  1. Love him or hate him, there will only be one like him in Nigeria! I am proud to call him a former President….as a person… Not members of his cabinet that created his chaos and misfortunes!
I wish him happiness and peace wherever he may be.

      1. @Opolo eye: I know Nigerians forget too easily and quickly but two days ago is not too far away na. How can you forget already the hate comments on social media. No one has said Adbusalam didn’t do well. Be kind to yourself and critically analyse both objectively. Don’t worry it won’t affect your geopolitical status,

      2. ” My political ambition is not worth the blood of any Nigerian” He said it, he meant it, he showed it! But for Buhari, it seemed, power was all that mattered; and it didn’t matter how much blood was spilled. Jonathan surely had his faults as a president, but I tell you, he had successfully proved himself to be a better and patriotic citizen than these desperadoes. He is what they can never be!….my political ambition is not worth the blood of any Nigerian! Congratulations my Hero; our own Nelson Mandela.

  2. I agree totally with maitama Sule: Jonathan is not a politician but a statesman. He has saved us a lot of crisis. Thank God for him. My utmost respect goes to him.

  3. President Jonathan is a good man. He just surrounded himself with rogues and bad advisers who really tarnished his administration. He has my utmost respect for conceding peacefully.

  4. I doubt if he will ever be forgotten. He redefined Nigeria I think God wants him to keep the record clean. I will for ever adore GEJ. Mr President

  5. I will keep on respecting in every aspect of the rule played .He has the power to rigged the election by removing Jiga still he didn’t. I like and respect for that cause you so simple and transparent.

  6. We will miss his many first,i hope the fulani man will also accept defeat when the time comes,we look forward for a more free n fare election, but I must warn that we don’t slip into a one party state,so come April 11 let’s balance the equation by giving PDP some slot voters take note

  7. His tenure is two years more than a single term and two years less than a double tenure as provided for in the Constitution. Jonathan also had the distinction of a tireless, and somwhat lively and entertaining firstlady always on the campaign trail.

  8. He is indeed a HERO and hard to get one like him, He will be more respected and valued nationally and internationally than OBJ. i wish the best in life

  9. A fine humble gentle man who was stigmatized by the cabals right from inceptions. He has demostrated that Nigeria is first in his heart. God bless him and his family. Thank you Dr. Jonathan for believing in Nigeria and Peace.

  10. I count him braver,he over come his heart desires and that is the hardest victory;that victory over ourselves.congratulating the president elect was an arrow that pierced the hearts of many.Even pastor Tunder Bakare never did so. GEJ has set an example,a good one that lighten many heavy hearts. We have eventually voted Buhari, the curse is now his to bear for another four years God willing.I shall pray for them both. This was how we voted GEJ.We hope he too will not throw our hopes in the thrash.

  11. I am very happy that the north and gen Bihari himself will also learn from the bad expirence of our former president that power does not belong to the northern part of the country ,it took the support of the south west for him to be elected and let him learn from our former president to also learn to accept defeat if he loses an election and also congratulate the winner bearing in mind that power belong to the people and not the birth right of any northern thank .

  12. I have always been proud to be a Nigerian. GEJ gave me yet another reason to be proud. God bless GEJ. GEJ is truly a great Nigerian. God Bless Nigeria.

  13. Thank God for God who Has made this possible. God who answers prayer has done it in His own way to ensure that our prayer for peace come to pass. God knows that is only Jonathan that will accept defeat thereby bringing about peace. For Buhari it would been the other way round. In all the time he has contested and loss, he never accepted that the process was free and fair but he was only rigged out and often follows with crises. And very sure if he had loss, it would have not be any difference. But he needs to know the game and spirit of the game that in every competition there must be a winner and loser and it could be either party contesting and not just think if anyone must loose, it must be the other person. And as for Babagida, he should just keep quiet and not say anything because he does not believe or respect the process of democracy as modern day system of chosen leaders. He believe in using the power of the gun. That is why he cancelled the June 12 election. And he needs to know that as long as nigeria and nigerian is concerned, Jonathan will be remembered as great leader while he will be remembered as a wicked and a bad leader. I am happy for my great country, Nigeria and it is my prayer that God who has made it possible for us to experience this great peace and joy, will perfect it by giving our president the grace to lead us in the fear of God. Amen

  14. Am just overwhelmed with everything happening in Naija now,its now clear that We decides who we want to govern us and our Elites should learn from this. It our overall responsibility to support the government to move Nigeria forward, let’s start answering good name to make our family outside the country to be happy to come home. God Bless Naija

  15. Kudos to GEJ, may u walk and never stumble, u have really shown an example of gud leader. U have made history, buh pls I also want u to learn from ur mistakes, dat sheep dat do fellowship wit Dog will eat stool. U ar surrounded by bad cabre

  16. great man a man of courage he stood up to the so called god fathers and said i will rather lose than lick your feet i love you GEJ GOD bless you

  17. The determinant of peace after an election lies not in the character of the winner (or those that voted for the winner), but the characters of those that lost (and those that voted for the losers). Case study: 2015 Nigerian Presidential Elections. Kudos to you GEJ!

  18. I really admired GEJ most than e ven the new president elect MGB. Because all his promises has come to pass. Hence, after handover let new president elect start work immediately; and made Nigerian proud of him as they are proudly for the out going president GEJ.

  19. GEJ is a Hero and GOD ALMIGHTY will continue to bless him. I don’t blame those who envy him, beacause he is blessed and God’s blessings naturally attract envy. He rose from Deputy Governor to Governor. From Governor to Vice President and from Vice President to President without any break in- between. This is unprecendented. He sincerely worked to expand the democratic space in Nigeria through free, fair and credible elections, tolerance of the opposition, freedom of information etc. All the these in the face of deep seated hatred and ochestrated cladestine efforts to pull the government down.

Soon and very soon Nigerians will truly realize what they have lost. God bless Nigeria.

  20. With this act (accepting defeat), I have dropped any grudge I hold against President Goodluck Jonathan. He has become my hero.

  21. I hope we do not also discount the spiritual significance of this election and the outcome.
    1. The election was held on the 28th March
    2. the scores recorded for GMB = 15,424,921
    3. the scores recorded for JEG = 12,843,162
    4. Now the sum of the scores for GMB: 1+5+4+2+4+9+2+1 = 28
    5. And the sum of the scores for JEG: 1+2+8+5+3+1+6+2 = 28 and
    6. the election was held on the 28th

    1. Check the addition of the Jonathan figures, it is not 28. There is a five there instead of a four, anyway good effort. And big big congratulations to President Jonathan, he is the real winner. History will be kind to him. All we mostly remember of IBB is June 12 annulment, OBJ, third term, Yar Adua…cabal that did not allow the good man take care of his health. Many thanks to Almighty God for his wisdom in ensuring there was no bloodshed. God will yet show why he has allowed this.

  22. The entire political brouhaha wasn’t caused by (GEJ) there’s a plan by some powerful elements to scatter Nigeria as a united country, but Nigerian are innocent & good in prayers, what saved us is the collective efforts & prayers of both Christian/Muslim, may emerge & start producing wires we buy from the west! we hv shame our enemies, the vultures who waited to descend & thief our abandoned resources!

  23. Step aside, Olusegun Obasanjo; Nigeria has a new international statesman. His name is Goodluck Ebele Jonathan. He is not vindictive, not small minded, and not as petty as the one we were managing with from Ota.

  24. Samuel, please check GEJ scores in items 3&5 of your submission. They do not seem to agree.Great effort though.

  25. Hello Samuel,

Thank you for the Maths, that’s really awesome, the spiritual undertone I believe it to be true, 28, 28, 28, that surely must mean something spiritually, that also shows that God will never stay his face away from us.
I am really proud of GEJ, he showed so much humility by his actions, accepting defeat before you could say Jack Robinson, I am so glad he allowed God to use him and I am grateful to God for all answered prayers. I hope you know that if the APC had lost this election, we would all have fled the country, I see now that the Boko Haram people are silent, what do you all think? I am not saying anything o! Good bye GEJ, you have made us proud, the end of a thing is better than the beginning, may God be with you and your family, guide you where ever you may go, we will miss Madam Patience the great comedian. GMB we are waiting for you to make the Naira one to the dollar, that’s what you said with your mouth, we are waiting, I voted for Change, not really for you per say, I love Professor Osinbajo, he is an honourable man, I hope you will listen to his counsel sometimes. God bless Nigeria and bless us all.

  26. OBJ never appreciated GEJ for conceding defeat to Buhari. He was only quick to reel out agenda for the incoming. Buhari needs to be careful with him. Kettle is not better than pot!

  27. thank God for his acceptance befor official decreration which makes peace to took place all over the conutry.

  28. Jonathan is the HERO of our time… He lost one election… But won the battle of life…Honourable life is far more rewarding than a momentary loss…

  29. My hero didn’t pass this election not because we didn’t vote for him, is just that, the seat of the president is too Small for his class. The Lord we serve want to give him a bigger seat. I Love You and will continue to love you till end of time. You are one in a billion

  30. I sincererly appreciate GEJ courage to read between the line that pdp is not worthy to die for imagine pdp governors selling their states to become an opposition party goodluck to them.

  31. NO NIGERIAN SHOULD INSULT OUR PRESIDENT GOODLUCK EBELE AZIKIWE JONATHAN. NIGERIANS ARE GOOD IN BRINGING DOWN OUR LEADERS AND INSULTING THEM ANYHOW.WE ARE WATCHING WHAT WILL HAPPEN IN THE DAYS AHEAD.

  32. Hmmm! True talk ooo. May God continue to put to shame & save us from the hands of those who are bent on destroying this country the way He had just done.

  33. Your comment..It is written, those who kill by the sword shall die by the sword…in a short time, Nigerians shall soon see the significance of this scripture-watch out! Thank God Almighty for making peace to reign at these period especially,2015 when the U S intelligence predicts the collapse of the union called Nigeria.
We are still in 2015, anything can still go wrong if we are not careful. Boko Haram was the pawn to be used which did not succeed. I dare say the Niger Delta militants may be the plan B! Come to think of it, what use will be Nigeria without the oil wealth? We all need to still pray and the incoming president must form and all inclusive government to allay the fears of most specifically, the minority from whose region the wealth of the nation comes from. God bless Nigeria.

  34. We are too sentimental as Nigerians. Whether Jonathan concedes defeat or not, that does not mean that one party should remain in power indefinitely. We must as a matter of fact try other parties to check mate the excesses of past leaders. Let us also know that we are talking about our future hear and not the sentiments we share about an individual. Our comments should be directed towards one Nigeria and not these tribalistic and religios centiments that we all plunge ourselves into. If a government is doing well, let us support the government and a government that is not doing well, let us not support such government. Why Jonathan remains a good man, PDP as a party was almost destroying our values. How can 16 be greater than 19 – governor forum. How can 5 legislators in Rivers be stronger than 27 and almost over turn the state assembly yet got congratulations from the federal government? How can OPC carry weapons in Lagos under the protection of police in the name of campaining for PDP. How can we have lawlessness and shooting in Rivers State, yet police could not bring the king pins to book. Look at the calous campaign against Buhari and the dehuminization of the man. Why did Jonathan not stop them from such lies and calousness? We need to call a spade a spade; while we see Jonathan as a complete gentle man, we must also realise that our future and the future of our children yet unborn is very critical here and very very important. Let us stop this childish centiment and work together to flush out negativity from our country. If Buhari fails us we shall flush him out likewise. However, i do not wish he fails us because we must forge ahead to a greater nation and meet up with china and other world leaders. God help us. Amen.

    1. Kk, did you read the article ‘The many first of president GEJ.’ These are no sentiments but facts that anyone can attest to. Except your comments are not meant for this article.
      Facts can not be denied.

  35. Your Excellency,my dear General Muhamadu Buhari, please learn from President Good-luck Ebele Joanathan, such virtue of conceding defeat with all honesty. By 2019 do not tell the Baboon to be soaked in Blood as you did in 2011. Learn from him sir,as this is the first time you are elected as an Executive President of Nigeria. It must not be a do or die politics ever again in Nigeria. Please be careful with Mr. Obasanjo, the former President. Note also that your troubles will start from within APC members. Watch most of them who are PDP at heart but APC in thier mouth. Be careful, Sir. See what you can do to build a stronger country. Do not allow Asiwaju Tinubu to fool you around. Be careful with him even though he is your merger Party Leader. Be prepared for greater challenges ahead. You may not end Boko Haram soon as this has become a money making machine for both Political and Military Elites. Your worst moments will be if you neglect any section of the country. Thanks and God bless.

  36. I wish all the personal firsts amounted to positive general firsts for the nation, alas!

This writer wouldn’t wish a sitting elected president had died for his vice to make a first in constitutional succession! What a first there!

  37. Your comment..life is true to them that are true.EVery seed haVe a Vanue, may this seed of GEJ produce UN sec.call, for him amen.

  38. Onabengha, thanks for the advise to the President-elect.it is important. However, I keep on telling people who care to listen and understand that, God is in the equation, whosoever want to cross the path of progress will be cleared off. The new dispensation is a result of prayers of the masses.
