Martins bags MLS player of the month award

Super Eagles forgotten man, Obafemi Martins, has been voted the Etihad Airways Player of the Month in the Major League Soccer (MLS) for September.

According to a statement on the MLS official website, the Seattle Sounders forward polled 58.48 per cent of the total votes by fans to win the award.

He scored five goals and had one assist in the month under review.

The former Inter striker beat LA Galaxy forward, Landon Donovan to second place. Donovan, August’s player of the month, got 13.56 per cent.

“In the fan vote, Oba’s 58.43 per cent comfortably out-polled LA Galaxy icon Landon Donovan, August’s POTM (player of the month) winner, who finished at 13.56 per cent, followed by Portland Timbers playmaker Diego Valeri, Columbus Crew goalkeeper Steve Clark and New England Revolution standout Lee Nguyen,” announced the MLS.

The former Newcastle striker’s partnership with Clint Dempsey, who won the award in April, has helped Seattle Sounders to the top of the MLS Western Conference and Supporters’ Shield standings.
