Kylian Mbappe scored the second goal to seal a 2-0 win for Real Madrid over Atalanta in the 2024 UEFA Super Cup final.

Los Blancos won their first trophy of the new season at the Stadion Narodowy, Warsaw, on Wednesday night.

Real Madrid scored both goals in the second half. Federico Valverde put the La Liga giants in the lead before Mbappe scored his first goal for the club on his debut.

Ademola Lookman, Super Eagles forward, played all 90 minutes for Atalanta but could not prevent Madrid from claiming a record-setting sixth Super Cup triumph.

The traditional curtain raiser for the continental season in Europe saw Real Madrid, UEFA Champions League (UCL) title holders, square off against Atalanta, and Carlo Ancelotti’s perennial winners showed their class again on the night.

The first half was full of endeavour on both sides but low on chances created. Atalanta’s Ederson curled an effort wide from 25 yards while Rodrygo hit the bar with the only clear-cut chance on the stroke of halftime.

The Italian side went close to taking the lead three minutes after the break through Mario Pasalic, but Real Madrid’s goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois denied the forward with a fine stop.

The breakthrough, however, came from the Spanish La Liga giants through a well-worked goal just before the hour mark. A disjointed Real Madrid managed to string a move together through Jude Bellingham and Vinicius Jr., and the latter teed up Valverde to slot into an empty net from six yards for 1-0.

Mbappe then announced the start of his Real Madrid career with a goal that sealed the win in the 68th minute. The French forward found the top corner from 12 yards for 2-0 and sent the game to bed.

Real Madrid made it three wins in three against Atalanta, and Carlo Ancelotti’s side became the only team with the most titles- one more than Barcelona and AC Milan.
