Kylian Mbappe scored a hattrick to lead Real Madrid to a crushing 3-1 win over Manchester City in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League (UCL) play-off.

The French forward hit the right tone for Real Madrid on Wednesday at Santiago Bernabeu Stadium as they qualified for the UCL second round with a 6-3 aggregate win.

Mbappe led a fearsome attacking quartet for the home side that included Vinicius Jr., Rodrygo, and Jude Bellingham as Pep Guardiola tinkered with his Man City side with the surprise relegation of Erling Haaland to the bench on a make-or-mar night.

Mbappe started the City annihilation in the fourth minute when he latched on to a ball over the top from defender Raul Acensio. The striker then lobbed onrushing Ederson Moraes, Man City goalkeeper, to send the Bernabeu crowd into early jubilations for 1-0.

The opening goal was Mbappe’s 500th goal contribution of his professional career, including 358 goals and 142 assists.

His second of the night was the pick of the bunch as Mbappe completed a team move for 2-0 in the 33rd minute. He evaded a couple of defenders and sent Josko Gvardiol sliding away before slotting into the net as Real Madrid took full control of the tie despite City hugging possession at the interval.

It was game over in the 61st minute when Mbappe completed his hattrick with a low hard shot into the far corner for 3-0 to Real Madrid.

It is Mbappe’s first hattrick in the UCL for Real Madrid, and his first at the club’s stadium.

The visitors scored a consolation goal in added time through Nico Gonzalez on the rebound as Guardiola’s side crashed out without reaching the round of 16 stage.

In other matches, Paris Saint-Germain crushed Brest, their French Ligue 1 compatriots, 7-0 for a 10-0 aggregate scoreline, while Dortmund also advanced despite a goalless second leg against Sporting Lisbon in Germany.
