Medical, dental practitioners demand upward review of doctors’ hazard allowance

The National Association of Government Medical and Dental Practitioners (NAGGMDP) has called on the federal government to urgently address the issues of welfare confronting doctors.

The association resolved to make the call at the national executive meeting of the body held in Port Harcourt from May 7 to May 14 2023.

In a communique read by Sofiri Starson, the national president, the body commended Ekiti and Delta states for their efforts in improving the welfare of the healthcare workers.

They, however, asked other states to follow suit by domesticating the reviewed hazard allowances, 100 percent consolidated medical salary structure, training grants prompt payment of salaries/arrears and ensure prompt promotions.

The practitioners also frowned at what they tagged a “malicious and obnoxious” bill sponsored at the national assembly by Ganiyu Johnson seeking to prescribe a five-year mandatory service for all Nigerian-trained doctors.

The association said the bill violates all known labour laws and infringes on fundamental rights to freedom of movement.

The body however commended Chris Ngige, the minister of labour, for standing by the truth and condemning the said bill in its entirety.

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) began a five-day warning strike on Wednesday due to the federal government’s inability to meet its demands.

The demands include massive recruitment of clinical staff in hospitals and immediate payment of the 2023 medical residency training fund (MRTF).
