Russia’s Daniil Medvedev has defeated Novak Djokovic 6-4,6-2,6-4 in the final of this year’s US Open to win his maiden Grand Slam title.
The world number 2 player achieved the feat on Sunday night at the Arthur Ashe stadium in New York.
The 25-year-old now becomes the first Russian to lift a Grand Slam title since Marat Safin at the 2005 Australian Open.
Medvedev also dashed Djokovic’s hope of becoming the first player to complete the calendar Grand Slam since Steffi Graff in 1988 — when she won all four Grand Slams and the Olympic gold medal in the same year.

Djokovic had already won the Australian Open, French Open, and Wimbledon titles this year.
The 34-year-old Serbian tennis legend would have also won his 21st Grand Slam men’s title had he won the final — a win that will have lifted him above rivals Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal in the battle to finish with the most men’s majors.
