Miner, three travellers killed in attack on Plateau communities

Three commuters and a miner have been killed following an attack on communities in Jos north LGA of Plateau state.

Ishaku Takwa, spokesperson of operation Safe Haven (OPSH) of the Nigerian Army, confirmed the development in a statement on Wednesday.

According to Takwa, the three commuters were murdered along the Jos-Jingir road, while the miner was killed in Yelwan Zangam community.

“Operation Safe Haven received a distress call on civil unrest that ensued between Fulani herders and miners at Yelwa Zangam general area of Jos North LGA in the early hours of Tuesday 15th of February 22,” the statement reads.

“Also, in the late hours of same day, a vehicle conveying passengers was attacked along Jos-Jingir road.

“Troops of Operation Safe Haven swiftly responded to both incidents and brought the situation under control. Unfortunately, one person was killed and another injured at the mining site.

“On the unfortunate attack on commuters, three persons lost their lives, 2 other passengers sustained varying degree of injuries, and 6 others were rescued.”

Ibrahim Ali, OPSH commander in the state, condemned the killing and commiserated with the families of the victims.

The commander also assured citizens that the troops will work to ensure that the perpetrators are found.

Meanwhile, Simon Lalong, governor of Plateau, has condemned the attack.

In a statement issued by Makut Macham, his spokesman, the governor also urged security agencies to ensure that the attackers are brought to book.

While commending security agencies for responding to the attack, Lalong also urged citizens to report suspicious activities in their neighbourhoods to security agencies for swift action.
