Eguavoen: I'm NFF technical director saddled with taking charge of the Super Eagles for now

Austin Eguavoen, Super Eagles interim head coach, says he is still in charge of the team “at this moment”.

Eguavoen spoke in a media chat at the Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport (NAIA), Abuja, in the early hours of Wednesday.

The 59-year-old was responding to reports claiming he quit his role as the Eagles’ interim head coach.

The reports quoted Eguavoen saying the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) gave him the mandate of leading the team to just the first two games of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) against the Benin Republic and Rwanda.

Dismissing claims of his resignation, Eguavoen said he only discussed “sitting down with the hierarchy of the federation after these two games and we will see how to go about prosecuting the next games”.

The manager added that he remains the “Technical Director of the NFF, saddled with the responsibility of taking the Super Eagles”.

“It’s quite unfortunate that people just trigger something that is not correct. And the situation we are in now, we don’t need negative stories,” Eguavoen said.

“I only talked about sitting down with the hierarchy of the federation after these two games and we will see how to go about prosecuting the next games.

“But when I saw that story, I was worried. Whatever people are reading out there is not correct. I’m still very much in charge. I’m the Technical Director of the NFF, saddled with the responsibility of taking the Super Eagles at this moment.”

Eguavoen was named the Eagles’ caretaker coach in August after the NFF deal with Bruno Labbadia, the German tactician, fell through.

In his first assignment, he led the team to a 3-0 home win over the Benin Republic and a frustrating goalless draw against Rwanda.
