Moses: I knew Liverpool would win the league after one training session

As the rest of the football world speculated over whether Brendan Rodgers could deliver a top-four finish at Anfield, Nigeria’s Victor Moses was in no doubt that the Reds would be aiming higher, much higher.

One training session was all he needed to know that Liverpool could win the Premier League this season.

Today, Liverpool sit five points clear at the top of the table, and are on a run of 11 straight league victories. Seven points (two wins and a draw) from their final three games will see them crowned champions for the first time since 1990. For Moses, that would be mere confirmation of what he has always known.

“When I first came here, I knew that Liverpool were going to win the league”, he told Liverpool Echo.

“Honestly! Even when I spoke to the press, I said that we would win it. Just from seeing the way everyone trained, that first training session, and the games that I played in early on, I could see the quality that we have here.

“There is huge talent at this club, and I knew that this team could go far. We are in a position now where if we win the rest of our games, we will win the Premier League. That’s not a bad position to be in, is it?”

The first of those games, of course, will hold a special interest for Moses. On loan from Chelsea, the winger won’t feature when his parent club visit Anfield on Sunday. but he says he will watch the game from home, as he naturally has friends in both camps.

“It will be strange for me, but they’re the rules,” he said. “I will train this week as normal. My job is just to make sure I stay fit, because we have other big games coming up, which I want to be involved in. I just have to work hard and to help the team as best I can.

“I still speak to a few of the lads at Chelsea and keep in touch with how they are doing, and they ask me how I am getting on up here as well. I have a lot of friends there. I speak to Jose Mourinho, too, every now and then. He asks how I am doing. I will be watching on Sunday, definitely!”

Moses described himself as “a Chelsea player, doing a professional job for Liverpool”, and says he has “genuinely enjoyed every minute” of his time at Anfield.

The Nigeria international has not started a Premier League game since the defeat to Hull on December 1, making just nine substitute appearances in the interim. but he is not losing sleep over it.

“Everyone is involved, whether they are playing or not,” he said.

“I know I haven’t played a lot of games, and there are a few others in the same position, but the most important thing we can do is to show our support to the players who are playing.

“What I want is what is best for the club. As long as the club is doing well, I am alright, and obviously I am really pleased with where the club is at at the moment! I love the club. It’s a massive club with amazing history, and I have enjoyed every single minute of being at Liverpool. The staff, the players, everyone is really friendly, and it is like a family club in that respect. That’s important for me.”
