Mudslide kills 4 siblings in Lagos

Godwin Odia, a 50-year-old man, who hails from Edo state, is yet to recover from the shock of losing four of his children in an early morning mudslide on Saturday.

The children, who were sleeping in one of the rooms of a bungalow located at 50 Otun Araromi street in the Magodo area of Lagos, got trapped after hours of the rain which unleashed the mudslide.

According to Ibrahim Farinloye, south-west spokesman of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), rescue officials had to dig the floor to retrieve the corpses of the deceased, whose ages ranged between 10 years and 23 years.

“The incident happened at about 4:50 am today and four persons were recovered dead,” he said.

“The cause of the collapse was the heavy rainfall. Mudslides from the cleavage of a hill beside River Ogun hit the three bedroom flat, unfortunately the room where the deceased were recovered was the one hit by the mudslides.

“The Lagos State Fire Service, Lagos State Emergency management Agency, Nigerian Police Force from Magodo and Isheri police station responded to the emergency and  four dead bodies were recovered after digging through the sand.

“They are: Isayo Odia (23 years); Clinton Odia (13 years);  Dasilver Odia (15 years); and Endurance Odia (1o years).”

Aside from the dead bodies recovered by emergency services, those rescued alive were said to have been rushed to the hospital.
