Muna Obiekwe: Dead… alive… dead

The death of Nollywood actor, Muna Obiekwe, has been confirmed by Nigerian and Ghanaian friends and colleges of the leading actor.

On Sunday, Muna was reported to have lost his battle with renal failure after being under dialysis for a lengthy period, but the reports were initially countered by a message from a Twitter handle believed to be Muna’s, which claimed that is was alive and in good health.

Muna, who did a good job of keeping his illness a secret, eventually informed Ibinabo Fiberesima, president Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN).

Fiberesima has now confirmed the death, while accrediting Muna as a very private person.

Fellow Nollywood actress Dayo Amusa took to her Instagram page to blast the industry for its continuous neglect in dealing with members of the industry.

“I truly hate to be a harbinger of bad news but I want to confirm that MUNA OBIEKWE IS DEAD! And am so angry!,” she said.

“Yes not just because we lost another great talent but because in this industry we are not our brothers’ keeper.”

While combating the information going round that Obiekwe loved to keep his life affairs private, Amusa suggested it wasn’t enough an excuse.

“Yes, Muna might have wanted or lived a private life but people knew he was sick, people knew his health condition and yet what did they do?

“Some tried but if they had cried out to the world, MUNA might have gotten help. We are just colleagues NO REAL FRIENDS! Rest In Peace MUNA.”

Actors Mike Ezurunoye and Kanayo O. Kanayo also confirmed the tragedy, with the latter, who had been insulted for “spreading false news”, saying he was informed by the deceased’s first cousin.

Kanayo, meanwhile, described the news as choking.

Muna, the first Nollywood actor to die in 2015, was known for his numerous romantic roles in movies in the Nigerian and Ghanaian movie industries.
