N4m up for grabs as West African women basketball league tips off Aug 21

Eight teams from across West Africa will be participating in the upcoming Crown Elite Women Basketball championship billed to tip off on August 21.

According to a statement from John Abalaka, media officer of the competition, the league will see teams from Nigeria, Ghana and Togo battle for over N4 million in cash prize and awards.

The competition will feature six Nigerian teams — First Bank basketball club, MFM basketball club, Nigerian Customs Womens’ basketball team, Bayelsa Strong Women’s basketball team, Blackgold basketball club, and Kada Angels.

They will be joined by The Reformers basketball club of Ghana and Togo’s Etoile Filante basketball club.

The eleven-day competition will also see male basketball teams in exhibition games as well as a Celebrity All-Star Game.

Participating teams will include Ebun Comets, Lagos Legend basketball club, University of Lagos basketball team, and MoHeat basketball club.

“From August 21st to 27th, the most decorated female teams from Nigeria, Ghana, and Togo will go head to head for the title of Crown Elite Women Basketball champion and a chance to win over N4 million in cash prizes and awards,” the statement reads.

“This year’s event will feature six (6) Nigerian female basketball clubs and two (2) international female clubs in a highly engaging and fan-centric contest. Participating teams will include First Bank Basketball Club Lagos State, MFM Basketball Club Lagos State, Nigerian Customs Womens’ Basketball Team Abuja, Bayelsa Strong Women’s Basketball Team, Blackgold Basketball Club Abia State, and Kada Angels Kaduna State.

“They will be joined by The Reformers basketball club of Ghana and Togo’s Etoile Filante basketball club.

“The event will also feature a high-power combo of top male teams in exhibition games throughout the week, as well as a Celebrity All-Star Game. Participating teams will include Ebun Comets of Lagos, Lagos Legend Basketball Club, University of Lagos Basketball team, and MoHeat Basketball Club, Abuja. The seven-day competition will showcase the best and brightest basketball talents on the national and international stage.

“This summer’s Crown Elite Basketball Championship will also provide thrilling opportunities for fans to get into the game. Lucky spectators will have the chance to walk away with cash in hand from the dunk and shooting contests. Additionally, the family-friendly environment will include cheerleaders, live entertainment, food, and drinks.

“Following their immensely successful 2021 and early 2022 tournaments, Crown Elite is poised to become Nigeria’s largest and most anticipated basketball competition. In line with Crown Elite’s goal of maximizing the potential of talented youth athletes and professional players, this year’s event will be complemented with a three-day Women’s Empowerment Expo, presented in conjunction with Ayo Charity Foundation.”
