Nanosilver – the drug originally touted as a cure for Ebola – was made to boost the immunue system and not to cure the viral disease currently bedevilling West Africa, its makers have said.
After the drug was offered to help in the recovery of victims of Ebola, minister for health, Professor Onyebuchi Chukwu said it would not be administered to the patient for its failure to meet the standards of the national health research ethic code.
It subsequently emerged that the US Environmental Protection Agency considers nano-silver a pesticide.
Its makers, Minerals for Life Ltd, a Nigerian-owned Biotech Company involved in the manufacture, distribution and marketing of mineral solutions, has now said the drug was never designed to cure Ebola but as “a dietary supplement”.

“Minerals for Life caters to numerous customers who utilize our Nanosilver Solution as an immune booster in a number of health situations,” it said in a statement.
“Concerned clientele have in recent days drawn our attention to a claim that Nanosilver solution, which is marketed for human consumption and ingestion, is a pesticide. It is therefore pertinent to address this information in the public domain.
“Nanosilver is approved by the USA department of Agriculture and Food, with a pesticide registration. Nanosilver is also approved by the same USA Department of Agriculture and Food with Food Establishment approval.

“Amongst other approvals Nanosilver is approved for purchase by the USA Government Veterans Hospital Association (both as a disinfectant and supplement). Nanosilver has well over 15 government approvals for various uses.
“Minerals for Life Ltd, in keeping with its goal of preserving life, donated our Nanosilver immune booster (which currently has the status of a food supplement), to assist the patients of the current Ebola pandemic because of the history of the use of Silver Solution. Minerals for Life Ltd did not claim Nanosilver as a cure for Ebola.”
The company congratulated the federal ministry of health and the Lagos state ministry of health for “their proactive approach in fighting the Ebola disease, which has resulted in the recovery of some patients treated with antibiotics and a cocktail of immune boosters”.
“Minerals for Life looks forward to the total containment of the Ebola disease and a healthy population of Nigerians,” it said.

The statement contradicts the claims of Mrs. Rima E. Laibow, the medical doctor behind the drug, who wrote an open letter to President Goodluck Jonathan on July 29, 2014, saying Nanosilver could “eliminate” Ebola through the use of small doses (½ teaspoonful three times per day) of 10 PPM administered to Ebola victims, contacts and potential contacts.
“I am writing urgently to propose to you that there is good reason to believe that there already is a natural solution for, and prevention against, the terrifying novel Ebola virus for which, at this point, no effective treatment or counter measures are thought to exist,” she had written in the letter.
“There is, in fact, a well-established, non-toxic anti-microbial, without any known side effects, available at remarkably low cost which – • Requires no refrigeration • Is self-sterilizing. • Is readily available • Has a very long shelf life • Is not subject to degradation under temperature and humidity extremes. That nutrient substance is Nano Silver.”
