The 81 division chapter of the Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives Association (NAOWA) has donated over 391 eyeglasses to schoolchildren in Lagos and Ogun states.
The initiative led by Rekiya Usman, chairperson of the association, in collaboration with Restore Foundation for Child Sight, a non-governmental organisation (NGNO), has also provided over 314 eye-related drugs to the beneficiaries.
In a statement on Wednesday by Olabisi Ayeni, acting spokesperson of the 81 Nigerian Army division, Usman said the “School eye health programme” would focus on training, screening, and intervention.
She said the association has trained teachers under the division to identify children with sight impairments, adding that over 3,110 students are in the screening phase.

Usman said 391 children have been identified with eye illness and presented with eyeglasses, while 12 other kids are scheduled for eye surgery.
Schools that benefited from the programme include Command Day Secondary Schools, Ojo, Ikeja and Oshodi.
Command Children Schools, Bonny Cantonment, Ojo and Ikeja. Others are NAOWA Nursery and Primary Schools, Ojo, Yaba, Ikorodu and Badagry, in Lagos state and NAOWA Nursery and Primary School, Owode, in Ogun.
