NPFL preview: With a lean purse and few signings, how far can Nasarawa United go?

Although Nasarawa United have retained the services of Kabiru Dogo for a third season, many wonder if the team’s limited finances will restrict their ability to improve in 2018.

Last season, the club nearly qualified for the CAF Confederation Cup and that, of course, will be a target ahead of the new season.

However, with a modest budget and the lack of an important signing to beef up attack, Nasarawa United may find it hard to compete.

Patience and rebuilding will be required, owing to the exit of important players like Abdulrahman Bashir, Adamu Hassan, Tayo Fabiyi and Olayinka Onaolapo.

To improve on the fifth place finish of 2017, the Solid Miners have brought in Oyedeji Samuel from ABS FC. The coach sees him as a versatile player who can play in several positions if needed.

Whether Nasarawa can challenge for the title will largely depend on the extent to which Dogo is able to motivate his wards and instill in them the drive to be consistent.

The difference maker – Douglas Achiv

The playmaker will once again be charged with not just providing the spark in attack, but to also chip in important goals.

Best signing – Thomas Zenke

The decision of the club to keep Zenke in Lafia makes him their best signing of the transfer window. The winger will provide the all-important crosses and some goals.

The big question

Without a huge spending power, how far can Nasarawa United go in the NPFL?
