Nasir Idris, governor of Kebbi, has approved over N967 million for the sponsorship of the state’s indigenous students in 36 tertiary institutions across the country.
Speaking on Thursday in Birnin Kebbi, the state capital, Isah Abubakar-Tunga, the commissioner for higher education, said the fund will benefit 20,908 students.
He said the initiative aligns with the governor’s mission of transforming higher education in the state.
“His determination [is] to ensure that the youths benefit in the agenda of the current political dispensation by sponsoring students within and outside the country for educational development of the state,” the commissioner said.

“His Excellency has, therefore, graciously approved the sum of N967.685,854 million being fees for the 20,908 students for the year 2022/2023 academic session.”
On March 13, the governor approved N241 million for the payment of gratuities to 91 civil servants who retired in November and December 2023.
The governor reduced the official work hours for civil servants in the state by two hours daily in “the spirit of Ramadan”.

Idris said his administration has financed the Ahmad Bello International Airport to airlift Kebbi indigenes for the 2024 Hajj pilgrimage.
On March 6, the governor distributed 24 brand new Toyota Fortuner Jeeps to members of the Kebbi state house of assembly.
