He said his greatest challenge in the past one year had been keeping the senate together.

According to him, the reason for this is the “close divide” in the upper legislative chamber.

“I think the greatest challenge has been keeping the senate together. This is a senate that has a close divide,” he said.

However, he added‎ that his colleagues had given him much support because of their commitment to Nigeria.

“We have moved on from what happened a year ago, and are focused on moving‎ forward,” he said.

‎The senate president also spoke on the security situation in the Niger Delta, suggesting that the government must choose dialogue over force.

“On the Niger Delta, government must dialogue; we do not believe force is the answer. We are confident that government would find a solution to the problem,” he said.
