National conference will address calls for youth inclusion in politics, say organisers

The organising committee of the upcoming ‘National Youth Conference’ says the event will focus on addressing the issue of youth inclusion in politics and governance.

The national youth conference is scheduled for October 12 to 15, and will take place at the VIP lounge of the Moshood Abiola national stadium, Abuja.

Speaking on Wednesday at a media briefing in Lagos, Nkechi Obi, conference coordinator, said a “desired platform” will be created to discuss the issues affecting Nigerian youths.

Obi said the conference, which is being hosted by the federal ministry of youth and sports development, was approved by President Muhammadu Buhari.

“The conference, which was made possible by the approval of President Muhammadu Buhari, is premised on the realisation that Nigeria needs her youths not only to be supported and developed, but to understand the dimensions of political developments, grasp national issues and consciously place themselves in a position of co-builders,” she said.

“The first-of-its-kind youth conference will discuss the diverse and urgent issues confronting the youth and tugging at the very heart of the nation.

“The main objective of the conference will be to explore the critical issues in the agitations and calls for more inclusive youth policies, to create the structure and system for youths to participate and thrive, regardless of the sector they choose to play in — politics, governance, tech, and creatives.”

She said five thematic areas have been identified to form the nucleus of the conversations at the conference — the areas are: politics and governance; innovation and technology; peace, unity and security; education and youth development, and sports, entertainment and creatives.

The organisers had earlier announced that over 6,000 youths have registered to participate virtually, while 370 delegates are expected to be physically present.
