The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) says LS Akila, a naval rating who opened fire on troops of operation Fansan Yamma, killing one personnel, will face a court-martial.

In a statement on Saturday, Edward Buba, director of defence media operations, said  the administrative procedure for notifying the deceased’s family has been activated.

“On October 25, 2024, at about 0312hrs, a Naval personnel, LS Akila A, deployed at FOB Dansadua for Operation FANSAN YAMMA, in questionable circumstances opened fire sporadically, killing a military colleague,” Buba said.

He added that Akila was arrested, disarmed, and detained, and an investigation is underway.

“After investigation, the case will be escalated to a standing court martial set up to address such misconduct among troops,” he added.

Another naval rating, Abdurasheed Mohammed, was also paraded on August 28 by the FCT police command for allegedly killing the son of Ishaya Ibrahim, former chief of naval staff, in Maitama district in Abuja.

Addressing a press conference, Benneth Igweh, then commissioner of police, said Mohammed was arrested during a routine stop-and-search operation on August 18 and found him driving a black Prado SUV.
