Lawyers with Disabilities, a group of lawyers under the aegis of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), has implored state governments to domesticate the disability law.

Assented to in 2019 by the President Muhammadu Buhari administration, most states are yet to domesticate it.

The lawyers said domesticating the law across states will protect the rights of persons with disabilities (PWDs) and their families.

They spoke at a summit in Maiduguri, the Borno state capital, while advocating for disability inclusion in all public programmes, policies and implementation.

The Discrimination against (Prohibition) Persons with Disability Act was introduced by the federal government to address challenges confronting PWDs, provide for their needs, and protect their rights.

All the 36 states in Nigeria, including the federal capital territory (FCT), were expected to domesticate the law and establish respective disability commissions.

While 19 states have so far domesticated the law, 17 have not.
