NBA to FG: Prioritise intelligence gathering to curb nationwide killings

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has asked the federal and state governments to end the renewed wave of killings in Plateau, Benue, and other parts of the country.

Gunmen have killed more than 100 people in Plateau communities in two weeks.

On April 14, at least 54 people were killed after gunmen invaded Kimakpa village in Miango district of Bassa LGA.

In a statement on Tuesday, Afam Osigwe, NBA president, said the attacks expose the failure of Nigeria’s internal security architecture.

Osigwe said the killings underscore the need for urgent and decisive action from those responsible for safeguarding lives and property.

“The NBA unequivocally condemns these heinous attacks and calls on all relevant security and law enforcement agencies to rise to the occasion by ensuring that the perpetrators are swiftly apprehended and brought to justice,” the statement reads.

“No society can thrive under the persistent threat of violence. The continued killings not only violate the sanctity of human life but also erode public trust in our institutions and the rule of law.”

Osigwe reminded the government that Section 14(2)(b) of the 1999 constitution (as amended) states that “the security and welfare of the people shall be the primary purpose of government”.

The NBA president said it is constitutionally unacceptable for Nigerians to continue living in fear while entire communities are attacked and displaced.

“The NBA calls on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the governors of the affected states to urgently deploy robust and coordinated security strategies that prioritise intelligence gathering, rapid response, and the protection of vulnerable communities,” he said.

He also asked Kayode Egbetokun, the inspector-general of police; the chief of army staff, and other security heads to act with urgency and professionalism.

Osigwe said civil society groups and the human rights commission must monitor developments and ensure victims are not forgotten.

“The NBA remains resolute in its commitment to the rule of law, the protection of human rights, and the pursuit of justice for all,” he added.

The association extended “heartfelt condolences to bereaved families and communities” while praying for peace and eternal rest for the departed souls.
