NBBF invites 29 players to camp ahead of FIBA Women’s Afrobasket Cup

Following its inauguration on Friday, the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) has released the list of players that will participate in the 2017 FIBA Afrobasket tournament.

Twenty-nine players were invited to the camps in Nigeria and the US, ahead of the championship holding in Mali.

The team, made up of 17 foreign-based and 12 home-based players, is expected to report to camp Monday.

According to the release signed by the secretary of the NBBF, Chimezie Asiegbu, the foreign based players will converge in Orlando, Florida while the home-based players alongside some of their foreign based counterparts holidaying in Nigeria will converge on Lagos.

The NBBF technical committee also announced the appointment of Vincent James Samuel as the new head coach of the women senior national team, replacing Scott Nnaji.

Vincent who led the team to a 68-64 victory over South Korea at the 2004 Olympics — the first ever victory by an African nation in an Olympic women’s basketball game — was handed the task of winning Nigeria’s first ever Afrobasket trophy.

Peter Ahmedu and Okworogu Ochuko were also named as part of the new technical crew.
