NBC introduces conservation clubs in secondary schools

The Nigerian Bottling Company Limited (NBC), a member of Coca-Cola Hellenic Bottling Company, has introduced water conservation clubs in some secondary schools in Imo state.

NBC also provided opportunity for 200 students from 10 secondary schools in the state to go on a guided tour of its Waste Water Treatment plants.

Uzo Odenigbo, the company’s head public affairs and communications, said the programme was organised in line with NBC’s commitment to sustainable partnerships and integrated approaches to solving water problems in communities under the company’s water stewardship programme.

He also harped on the need to ensure that a finite natural resource such as water is adequately conserved.

“This year, we have gone a step further to ensure the sustainability of our awareness campaign on safe water practices with the students, by encouraging and supporting them to start water conservation clubs in their schools,” he said.

Ben Langat, managing director of NBC, said the project will expose participating students to the importance of water.

He also highlighted the challenges that local communities in the country were experiencing in accessing potable water, suggesting the intervention of the private sector.

Langat said NBC is committed to providing access to potable water for communities under its water stewardship programme.

“The clubs will further provide volunteering opportunities for our colleagues and water specialist to donate their time and expertise to aid knowledge transfer on safe water practices among students in a sustainable way,” he said.

“People do not need to stress or spend a part of their income to access safe water,” he said.
