NBS: Domestic airfares rose by 21% to N79k in one year

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) says the average price of domestic flight tickets in Nigeria rose to N79,011 in a year.

The NBS disclosed this in its recent ‘Transport Fare Watch’ report for August 2023, released on Monday.

According to the report, the figure shows that airfares increased by 21.48 percent (year-on-year ) from N65,041 in August 2022.

The NBS said the average fare paid by air passengers for a single flight ticket increased by 0.30 percent from N78,775 in July 2023, to N79,011.38 in August.

“In air travel, the average fare paid by air passengers for specified routes single journey increased by 0.30% from N78,775.74 in July 2023 to N79,011.38 in August 2023,” the report reads.

“On a year-on-year basis, the fare rose by 21.48% from N65,041.89 in August 2022.”

The report further showed that the states with the highest average prices of airplane tickets on a single journey are Delta (N87,000) and Enugu (N85,000).

“Conversely, Abia recorded the least fare with N70,000.03, followed by Niger with N73,000.00,” NBS said.

The NBS also said the average fare paid by commuters for bus journeys within the city per drop increased by 0.01 percent from N1,336.29 in July to N1,336.38 in August 2023.

But on a year-on-year basis, the report said, fares rose by 121.81 percent from N602.48 in August 2022.

“In another category, the average fare paid by commuters for bus journey intercity per drop declined to N5,918.18 in August 2023, indicating a decrease of 0.02% on a month-on-month basis compared to N5,919.49 in July 2023. On a year-on-year basis, the fare rose by 56.57% from N3,779.96 in August 2022,” the NBS said.

“The average transport fare paid on Okada transportation was N646.12 in August 2023 which was the same rate recorded in July 2023 (N646.12).

“On a year-on-year basis, the fare rose by 46.91% when compared with August 2022 (N439.80).

“For water transport (waterway passenger transportation), the average fare paid in August 2023 increased to N1,406.74 from N1,406.70 which indicate non-significant increase of 0.00% on monthly basis from July 2023.”

On a year-on-year basis, NBS said the fare increased by 44.39 percent from N974.26 in August 2022.
