NCC names Glo fastest-growing operator

Telecommunications firm Globacom recorded the fastest growth in the sector in the second quarter of 2015, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has said. 

According to the mid-year report of the commission, Globacom surpassed other telecoms companies by recording a growth rate of 5.86 per cent at the end of the second quarter.

The report shows that Globacom increased its subscriber figure from 25,177,125 in the first quarter to 31,256,677 at the end of the second quarter.

Etisalat came second with a record of 3.4 per cent growth rate moving from 28,680,757 in the first quarter to 22,852,232 at the end of the second quarter.

Airtel placed third, growing by 3 per cent from 28,680,757 in the first quarter to 29,564,766 at the end of the second quarter.

MTN, which has the highest subscriber population, recorded the least growth rate of 2.72 per cent, moving from 61,149,397 in the first quarter to 62,813,111 at the end of the second quarter.

Globacom has remained consistent going by the latest report, and the national bureau of statistics recently credited it with driving growth rate in the industry.

A report of the NCC also showed that Globacom acquired 1 million new internet subscribers in April, translating to 67.98 per cent of new subscribers in April 2015.

The report also revealed that MTN lost 384,487 internet subscribers within the period, while Airtel recorded 669,518 and Etisalat had 231,661 new internet subscribers in April.
