NCC ‘will take action’ against networks allowing use of unregistered SIM cards

Tony Ojobo, director public affairs, Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), has said telecoms service providers who allow the use of unregistered SIM cards will no longer be tolerated.

The NCC said there will henceforth be consequences for flouting the directive.

Ojobo said this on Monday while delivering a lecture at an event organised by Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) in Lagos.

The theme of the event was ‘Trackable Identity and Integrity in Business and National Reputation’.

He explained that trackable identity is the ability to identify an individual operating in the cyberspace.

Ojobo said identifying all those in the country’s cyberspace will help in reducing fraud and mistrust.

The director said the service providers are obligated to the identify all callers on their respective networks.

He listed the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) as one of the agencies that could help track identities of those using the nation’s cyberspace.

The director said the “centrality of trackable identity” will the ease doing business, reduce mistrust and incidence of fraud.

“We all need to be able to identify those we are dealing with especially in the cyberspace to reduce mistrust and fraud as well as to improve the integrity of transactions,” Ojobo said.

“The totalling experience of these practices will also help in the fight against economic and financial crimes.”
