Nigeria’s single-day death toll record hit another high on Monday, with 23 persons confirmed to have died of the coronavirus within the past 24 hours.

This is the country’s highest daily record in close to two weeks — the last time the figure exceeded 23 was on February 12, when 24 persons were confirmed to have died of COVID-19.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) confirmed the new figure in its update for February 22, adding that the record includes a backlog of deaths confirmed in Lagos.

With the new figure, 101 deaths have been confirmed within the past seven days, while Nigeria’s fatality toll stands at 1,862.

Lagos currently has the highest number of fatalities in the country with 399 deaths, followed by Edo with 158, and the federal capital territory (FCT) with 142.

Meanwhile, the number of new infections stayed on the relatively low side, with 542 samples confirmed positive on Monday.

According to the agency, the 542 new cases are reported from 20 states and the FCT, with Lagos as top of the list with 99 infections, followed by Kwara with 91, and Ebonyi with 48.

Other states with positive samples on Monday are as follows: Ogun (44), Kaduna (42), Oyo (33), Ondo (25), FCT (24), Kebbi (23), Osun (20), Ekiti (17), Nasarawa (12), Imo (11), Delta (10), Gombe (9), Kano (8), Katsina (7), Rivers (7), Edo (5), Plateau (4), and Bauchi (3).

However, 681 patients were confirmed to have been discharged across the country on Monday, including 193 community recoveries in Lagos and 113 persons in Kwara “managed in line with guidelines”.

A total of 152,616 new cases have now been confirmed across the country, with 21,363 currently active cases.
