NCoS, police partner to revamp Enugu training school for juvenile inmates

The Nigerian Correctional Services (NCoS) has called for synergy with the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) to reopen a Borstal Training Institution (BTI) in Enugu for underaged inmates.

BTI is a place where juvenile offenders are remanded and given educational and vocational training to rehabilitate and reform them before reintegration into society.

NAN reports that Elizabeth Ezenwanne, Enugu NCoS controller and principal of the BTI, spoke during a familiarisation visit to Ammani Ahmed, the state commissioner of police, on Friday.

Ezenwanne said the visit was to discuss with the police, measures required to reopen the BTI in the state.

During the visit, the state NCoS controller called for increased cooperation between the two outfits.

Ezenwanne also lamented the fact that some serving and retired police officers refused to vacate some of BTI’s quarters in the state.

Speaking during the meeting, Ahmed reiterated his command’s commitment to give the necessary support required to make the institute functional as soon as possible.

The commissioner of police said with the astronomical rise in juvenile delinquency, having only three Borstal institutions in the entire country was grossly inadequate.

On the illegal occupation of some of the quarters by his officers, Ahmed said he has already asked relevant authorities to look into the matter.
