The national commission for persons with disabilities (NCPWD), has lauded the federal government for implementing the five percent employment quota for people with disabilities (PWDs) across ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs).

Ayuba Gufwan, executive secretary of the commission, made the remarks during a visit to the Federal Civil Service Commission (FCSC) in Abuja.

Gufwan noted that this implementation is in line with the 2018 Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act.

He appreciated Tunji Olaopa, chair of the FCSC, for his commitment to upholding the federal civil service mandate.

Gufwan called for greater representation of PWDs in government offices.

“Many talented young PWDs possess the necessary qualifications for federal civil service positions but are hard to trace due to poor infrastructure at the grassroots,” he said.

Gufwan also promised that the NCPWD would soon begin data collection on all disability clusters to better understand the status of its members.

Olaopa, in turn, lauded Gufwan and the NCPWD staff for their dedication to addressing disability issues.

He noted that the federal ministry of education has exceeded the five percent employment quota, reaching 6 percent, and suggested this could be replicated in other MDAs.

He also announced plans to partner with NCPWD to establish desk offices at the FCSC to improve communication.
