James Lalu, executive secretary of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD), has presented copies of the accessibility regulations documents to Ahmed Dangiwa, minister of housing and urban development.

Lalu said the commission is taking steps to provide affordable and accessible houses for PWDs, which will be guided by the prescription and measurements specified in the structural engineering documents.

He added that many structures in Nigeria were not erected in line with building codes contained in the accessibility regulations. He said the parameters and conditions in the documents need to be taken seriously.

“I want to assure you that as the federal government embarks on building houses for the citizens, the accessibility regulations will make the designs globally acceptable,” he said.

The minister said his office is mindful of the provisions of the sections of the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act 2018.

Dangiwa commended the NCPWD for adequately representing over 35 million PWDs in Nigeria.

The minister said sections 3, 4, 5 and 7 of the act are clear about the parameters for the construction of public facilities.
