The National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) says its operatives have arrested a suspected Indian hemp cultivator in Sokoto state.
Speaking with journalists on Saturday, Adamu Iro, NDLEA commandant in Sokoto, said the suspect, identified as Anas Sani, was arrested at Sayinna village in Tambuwal LGA.
Iro said the suspect cultivated a foreign variety of cannabis sativa on his maize farm, adding that the officials of the NDLEA raided the plantation and uprooted the illicit plants.
He said the suspect would be prosecuted after a laboratory analysis is conducted on the leaves.

“It is the first such case in the history of the state,” NAN quoted Iro as saying.
The commandant urged residents not to relent and continue to support the agency in the fight against illicit drugs.
He warned residents against planting Indian hemp and dealing in illicit drugs, adding that those found engaged in such activities would be punished.

In recent weeks, the NDLEA has intensified efforts in the fight against illicit drug activities in the country.
On November 5, three visually impaired men were arrested for operating an illegal drug ring between Lagos and Kano states.
Last week, some suspects were arrested for organising a “drug party” in Osogbo, the capital of Osun state.
