Ibrahim Wushishi, registrar of the National Examinations Council (NECO), has been elected as a member of the executive council of the Association for Educational Assessment in Africa (AEAA).

The AEAA held its 40th conference between August 19 and 23 in Cape Town, South Africa.

There were 21 active primary members in attendance alongside other public and private institutions.

Azeez Sani, NECO’s acting spokesperson, said Wushishi was voted in as executive council member at the conference.

Wushishi will join the other seven members elected from other African examination bodies.

The AEAA was established in 1982 to promote cooperation among African examining and assessment bodies.

The association is saddled with the harmonisation of educational assessment in Africa.

As an executive council member, Wushishi and his colleagues are expected to be involved in developing and implementing policies that govern the activities of the AEAA.

This includes establishing standards for educational assessments across Africa.

Wushishi, aged 59, is a professor of science education from the Federal University of Technology of Minna (FUTMINNA).

He was appointed the registrar and CEO of NECO in 2021.

He was the former head of the department of science education and sub-dean at the School of Science and Science Education at FUTMINNA.

In 2023 under Wushishi, NECO received 70 operational vehicles and scanning facilities from the federal government to improve examination services.

In February 2024, NECO launched software to facilitate the posting of staff to parts of the country during its scheduled examinations.
