NEDC distributes 188 mobility devices to PWDs in Borno

The North East Development Commission (NEDC) has distributed 188 assistive devices to persons with disabilities (PWDs) in Borno state.

The devices consist of crutches, prostheses, wheelchairs and walking armpits.

The beneficiaries were selected from the Maiduguri Metropolitan Council (MMC) and Jere council.

The commission said the devices were procured at N94 million.

Mohammed Alkali, managing director of the commission, said the devices would aid PWDs to access markets, schools and hospitals.

He added that more than 300 beneficiaries were given N50,000 each as transport fare to their communities.

The NEDC MD said 100 of the devices are prostheses, 30 are wheelchairs, 30 are crutches and 28 are walking armpits.

James Lalu, executive secretary of National Commission of Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD), said there are eight million PWDs in the north-east.

He said the event was a milestone in the commission’s bid to meet the needs of PWDs in Nigeria.
