The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) says it will launch a skills acquisition programme for students in the nation’s tertiary institutions.

Akintunde Sawyerr, NELFUND managing director, who spoke at a press conference in Abuja on Thursday, said the programme would equip the students with practical and relevant skills for the modern job market.

“Six months from today, we will launch a comprehensive skills acquisition programme providing training in various vocational and technical fields,” Sawyerr said.

“This programme is designed to prepare students to meet the demands of the modern job market, fostering entrepreneurship and innovation amongst our young people.”

He said NELFUND would partner with existing skills acquisition centres to launch the programme.

On the ongoing student loan scheme that kicked off last week, Sawyerr said NELFUND is working with 126 tertiary institutions, adding that over 9.5 million people have visited the portal since it was launched.

On May 24, the NELFUND portal went live and became accessible to members of the public.

NELFUND said students of federal universities, polytechnics, and colleges would benefit from the first phase of the scheme.

However, Sawyerr also announced on Thursday that applications for students in state-owned institutions would begin in three weeks.
