The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has commenced flood mitigation efforts and distribution of relief materials to disaster victims across the country.

Mustapha Ahmed, NEMA director general, in a tweet on Sunday, said the organisation is focused on enhancing the capacity of disaster response in high risk communities.

Ahmed said NEMA would ensure the evacuation of refuse on water ways to prevent flooding, as well as carry out campaign programs to enlighten vulnerable communities.

“I led a team from NEMA to attend the National Economic Council (NEC) meeting chaired by the vice-president on Thursday 20th July,” he said.

“I made a presentation on flood readiness and response across states and highlighted that the plight of victims of flood disasters could be alleviated if the much-needed intervention from the FG materializes without further delay.

“A key outcome from the course was the production of disaster early warning alerts that are disseminated to at-risk communities nationwide to enhance their capacity to act as first responders.

“Other proactive measures would include ensuring the immediate evacuation of refuse, weeds, water hyacinths, and floats from water channels and on all avenues for river run-offs to allow the free flow of excess water.

“A key resolution at the end of the session was the Council’s resolution that NEMA should commence the immediate distribution of relief materials to flood and disaster victims across the country.”
