NEMA: One dead, seven injured in Balogun market fire

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) says one body was recovered and seven persons were injured in the fire outbreak at a five-storey building in Balogun market, Lagos state.

NAN reports that Ibrahim Farinloye, Lagos territorial coordinator of NEMA, confirmed the casualties on Tuesday.

TheCable had reported that the fire, which broke out on Tuesday morning, affected the “topmost floor” of the building where traders sell shoes.

The Lagos State Fire & Rescue Service said its operatives responded to the emergency and brought the fire under control.

Farinloye added that four persons were arrested for stealing valuables from shops.

The incident was the second market fire in the state in the last few weeks.

Prior to the governorship election, a fire outbreak destroyed some shops at the Akere auto parts market in the Olodi Apapa area of the state.

In January, a five-storey building at Gbajumo street, also in Balogun market, was razed by fire.

According to a report published by TheCable in 2021, Oyo and Lagos states reported the most market fires in the year under review.
