The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) says 11 out of 17 LGAs in Abia will be affected by flood.
Zubaida Umar, NEMA director-general, made this known on Thursday at the downscaling and sensitisation of the 2024 flood early warning strategies in Umuahia, the state capital.
Umar, who was represented by Martins Ejike, NEMA acting director, human resource management, said the state was predicted to fall within the moderate flood risk areas.
“It is about taking action in order to alleviate the sufferings of our people, especially as it affects the impending flood disaster,” Umar said.
The NEMA boss said the LGA’s to be affected include Aba south, Aba north, Osisioma Ngwa, Ukwa west, Umuahia north, Umunneochi among others.
He added that the exercise was part of efforts to build disaster resilience in flood-prone communities.
Umar commended Alex Otti, governor of the state, for his effort in ensuring flood risk reduction.
On his part, Otti thanked the NEMA boss for the choice of Abia as one of the states in the country in launching the sensitisation exercise.
