The Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA) has assured customers that the ongoing electricity meter upgrade process will not affect the credit unit balance in their meters.

Aliyu Tahir, managing director of NEMSA, gave the assurance in a statement in Abuja on Sunday, addressing the issue of standard transfer specifications for the upgrade of prepaid meters.

According to Tahir, his agency would ensure that all electricity meters and instruments deployed in the sector are of the right standard.

“Let me assure all electricity customers that they have nothing to fear as the meter upgrade process will not affect the credit unit balance on their meters. The credit balance will remain intact after the upgrade,” he said.

“They are also to note that meter upgrade is a one-time process. Subsequent energy token purchases will continue as usual after the upgrade has been completed.”

On August 23, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) asked prepaid meter users to update their meters before November next year.

The commission said prepaid meter users might face difficulties in recharging their meters after November 2024, if the required update is not done before the deadline.

While assuring that the update is free of charge, NERC advised users to get in touch with their respective electricity distribution companies (DisCos) for more information on the process.
