The Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) says it has partnered with the Nigerian Data Protection Commission (NDPC) to establish a framework to secure personal and corporate data in Nigeria’s export sector.

Nonye Ayeni, the executive director of NEPC, spoke on Wednesday while receiving Vincent Olatunji, the NDPC commissioner, in her office in Abuja.

Ayeni said protecting the sensitive data of exporters is important given the large number of registered exporters in the country working to meet international contract obligations for the export of made-in-Nigeria products.

She said safeguarding data could attract positive endorsements from the international community and boost foreign direct investment (FDI) into Nigeria.

Also speaking at the meeting, Olatunji said the commission’s mandate includes collaborating with key stakeholders to protect the rights of individuals to data privacy.

He said the NDPC’s role is to ensure safe transactions involving personal data, prevent manipulation, and help Nigerian businesses remain competitive internationally through legal safeguards on data protection.

Olatunji asked the NEPC to set up a data protection and control unit to manage how data is processed, ensuring collection methods align with the principles of data protection.

He added that the NDPC would offer capacity-building programmes on data protection for NEPC officers to ensure compliance with global best practices.
