The Niger police command says its operatives have found the remains of a newborn on a farmland in the Tayi area of Minna, the state capital.
NAN reports that Wasiu Abiodun, police spokesperson in the state, said the corpse of the baby was discovered on August 9.
Abiodun said the GRA Police Division received information about the incident and invited welfare officials of Chanchaga LGA of the state.
He said the baby, about a day old, was confirmed dead by a medical professional after examination.

The police spokesperson said the incident is currently under investigation and called on community members to support the command with information to apprehend the perpetrator.
Meanwhile, a resident of the community said such an incident has never been recorded in the area.
“The person must have abandoned the baby while still alive, but due to severe exposure to cold, the baby died. This is the first time we are seeing this type of such occurrence in our area,” the source said.
