Newcastle eliminate Man City from Carabao Cup as Iwobi scores in Fulham win

Newcastle scored in the second half to claim a hard-fought win which led to the elimination of Manchester City from the Carabao Cup at St. James’ Park on Wednesday.

Alexander Isak scored the solitary goal as both sides paraded changed line-ups in the domestic cup competition.

Man City dominated the first half but could not find a way behind Newcastle. The home side improved after the break to deliver the sucker punch.

Isak was well positioned at the back post to sweep home a cross for what turned out to be the winner, handing City their first loss of the season in regulation minutes.

The loss also means City, winners of the competition in four successive seasons from 2018 to 2021, will exit the Carabao Cup in the third round for the first time since 2012.

In other matches, Alex Iwobi, Super Eagles midfielder, was among the scorers as Fulham advanced, thanks to a 2-1 win over Norwich City.

Chelsea also secured their first victory in four attempts in all competitions with a 1-0 win over Brighton.

Liverpool came from behind for the umpteenth time to claim a 3-1 win over Leicester City as Arsenal won by a solitary goal against Brentford.
