Newspaper Headlines: 196 soldiers resign, to proceed on terminal leave Nov 1

Reports on the petrol tanker explosion in Niger state dominate the frontpages of Nigerian dailies.

The Punch reports that oil marketers may begin the importation of petrol as talks between the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) and Dangote Petroleum Refinery on appropriate pricing hit a brickwall. The newspaper says 48 persons were confirmed dead in a petrol tanker explosion along Lapai-Agaie road in Agaie LGA of Niger state.
Vanguard reports that the recent hike in petrol price has worsened the suffering of Nigerians. The newspaper says the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, (NDLEA) has intercepted consignments of cocaine and pharmaceutical opioids concealed in ladies’ sanitary pads and hair treatment cream containers by three courier firms in Lagos.
The Guardian reports that parents are lamenting the increase in school fares and transport fares amid the recent hike in petrol price. The newspaper says the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has warned Nigerians against the use of miracle water and soap from Christ Mercy Land Delivery Ministries in Delta state.
Nigerian Tribune reports that former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has said the reported plan to increase value-added tax (VAT) from 7.5 percent to 10 percent would exacerbate the economic hardship in the land. The newspaper says the national leadership of the Labour Party (LP) may sanction members of the party who attended the stakeholders’ convention in Abia state.
Daily Trust reports that some personnel of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) and Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) deployed to man Nigeria’s land borders, have decried the non-payment of their allowances for two and a half years. The newspaper says at least 196 soldiers, mostly junior officers from various formations across the country, have tendered their resignation letters to the Nigerian Army.
