Newspaper Headlines: 25m Nigerians at risk of severe hunger in 2023, says FAO

The resumption of Godwin Emefiele, governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), amid an alleged plot to arrest him, dominated the cover pages of Nigerian newspapers

The Punch says the battle between Emefiele and the Department of State Services over a plan to arrest the CBN governor may have been put on hold as Emefiele returns to work. The newspaper reports that the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) may sue the federal government over withheld salaries.
The Nation says the presidential campaign council of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has called for the arrest and prosecution of Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), over alleged corruption. The newspaper reports that the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and the family of Nnamdi Kanu, its leader, have disagreed on the offer by Chukwuma Soludo, governor of Anambra, to stand as surety for the IPOB leader.
Daily Trust reports that Emefiele has resumed his official duties amid fears of arrest. The newspaper says Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has promised to dismantle inefficiency and eliminate transactional policies that breed corruption in government if elected president.
The Guardian says labour unions have opposed the move to stop petrol subsidy without rehabilitation of the nation’s refineries. The newspaper reports that the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) has warned that 25 million Nigerians risk severe hunger between June and August 2023.
Daily Independent says inflation eased for the first time in 11 months to 21.34 percent. The newspaper reports that the office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Enugu south LGA has been attacked by gunmen.
