Newspaper Headlines: 3,252 persons affected by Nigeria-Niger rail project yet to receive compensation

Reactions to the 50 percent hike in telecommunication tariffs perfuse the cover pages of the nation’s dailies. 

The Punch reports that three years after the commencement of the Kano-Niger Republic rail project, 3,252 displaced persons have still not received compensation. The newspaper says the major political parties in the country have insisted that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) must continue to conduct by-elections into legislative seats made vacant by resignations or deaths.

 

Daily Trust reports that the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) reported that industries accumulated N1.4 trillion in unsold goods in 2024. The newspaper says the Association of Resident Doctors in the federal capital territory (FCT) on Wednesday began a three-day warning strike over unpaid salaries, allowances, and other demands.
The Nation reports that the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) have rejected the 50 percent tariff hike by telecommunication companies. The newspaper says some members of the national working committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) said Umar Damagum should continue as acting national chairman of the party till December 2025.
Nigerian Tribune reports that Beatrice, wife of Ike Ekweremadu, former deputy senate president, has returned to Nigeria from prison in the UK. The newspaper says students of college of medicine at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, staged a peaceful protest over the persistent blackout at the facility.
