Newspaper Headlines: 91 groups seek INEC registration as coalition talks gather steam

Reports on the petition to recall Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan from the senate, registration of new parties, immunity clause debate, permeate the frontpages of the dailies. 

The Punch reports that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed the receipt of 91 applications for the registration of new political parties ahead of the 2027 elections. The newspaper says governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Wednesday took legal action against the federal government, challenging the suspension of Siminalayi Fubara, governor of Rivers, and his deputy, Ngozi Odu.
Daily Trust reports that the move by the house of representatives to strip vice-presidents, governors and their deputies of immunity from prosecution, while sparing the president, has sparked debates among stakeholders. The newspaper says the Lakurawa group on Tuesday killed two customs officers and a resident at Bachaka border in Argungu LGA of Kebbi state.

 

The Nation reports that Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, chief justice of Nigeria, and Babatunde Fashola, former minister of works, have warned against rising misconduct among lawyers. INEC has notified Akpoti-Uduaghan, Kogi central senator, of the petition to recall her.
Nigerian Tribune reports that the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has commenced the implementation of zero tax on imported pharmaceutical inputs for two years. The newspaper says Douye Diri, governor of Bayelsa, has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to reconsider his declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers state and set up a committee to reconcile the warring parties in the state.
