Newspaper Headlines: Afenifere, Ohanaeze hail resolutions of southern governors

The resolutions of southern governors after a meeting in Lagos state on Tuesday, especially the zoning of 2023 presidency to the region dominated the cover pages of Nigerian newspapers.

Daily Independent reports that Afenifere, Ohanaeze and PANDEF hailed the resolution of southern governors that the 2023 presidency be zoned to the region. Edwin Clark, an Ijaw leader, said the Niger Delta may stop oil production over what he described as the unjust Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB), the newspaper reports.

The Punch says Ohanaeze has insisted on the 2023 presidency slot for the Igbo after the southern governors decided that the south should produce the next president. The newspaper reports that the two major Christian bodies tackled the federal government over the abduction of many students in Kaduna.

The Nation reports that southern governors have called for a power shift to the south. The newspaper says the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) quizzed the speaker and the clerk of the Oyo state house of assembly over N1 billion vehicle contracts.
The Guardian reports that Kingsley Moghalu, former presidential candidate, said the 1999 constitution does not encourage economic diversification. Southern governors rejected the use of 30 percent revenue for the exploration of oil in frontier basins, the newspaper says.
