Newspaper Headlines: Again, NNPC postpones Port Harcourt refinery kick-off

Reports on the first council of state meeting under President Bola Tinubu, and the remuneration of senators, permeate the frontpages of Nigerian newspapers.

The Punch reports that the federal government has traced at least N83 billion in cryptocurrency and fiat money channelled towards the recent nationwide protests. The newspaper says the National Judicial Council (NJC) is set to meet on Friday, August 16, to decide on a successor for Olukayode Ariwoola, outgoing chief justice of Nigeria (CJN). The newspaper also reports that the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) has postponed the take off of the Port Harcourt refinery for the umpteenth time.
THISDAY reports that the National Council of State (NCS) and Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), at separate meetings yesterday, passed a vote of confidence in the 14-month-old administration of President Tinubu. The newspaper says the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) said it has reintroduced the publication of several key economic reports which had been discontinued.
The Guardian reports that many states are ignoring the opportunity to enroll their citizens in the national health insurance scheme amid the high cost of medical treatment. The newspaper says the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has released N50 billion, in line with the president’s directive, to the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND).
Nigerian Tribune reports that the house of representatives is expected to debate on a bill on the conduct of elections to the offices of the president, state governors, national assembly, state houses of assembly and LGAs in one day. The newspaper says the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMFAC) said each senator earns a monthly salary of N1,063,860.
