Newspaper Headlines: AGF to defend Tinubu on Rivers emergency as PDP governors hire 11 SANs

The judgment of a US court on President Bola Tinubu’s alleged drug trafficking case dominates the frontpages. 

The Punch reports that Lateef Fagbemi, attorney-general of the federation, has commenced drafting of Tinubu’s response to a suit filed by governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) challenging the declaration of emergency rule in Rivers state. The newspaper says the federal high court sitting in Abuja will on Tuesday hear a suit filed by the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) against the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and others over the implementation of local government autonomy.
Nigerian Tribune reports that the recent judgments of the supreme court have further compounded the leadership crisis in the Labour Party (LP) and PDP. The newspaper says Wole Soyinka, Nobel Laureate, has condemned the recent ban on a song by Eedris Abdulkareem, describing the development as a return to the culture of censorship.
Vanguard reports that the presidency said there is nothing new in the records of the United States’ Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) on alleged involvement of Tinubu in drug trafficking. The newspaper says the national leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has condemned the recent killings in Plateau state, describing the attacks as senseless and a gross violation of human dignity and the sanctity of life.
The Nation reports that Abbas Tajudeen, speaker of the house of representatives, will on Tuesday inaugurate a 19-member committee to perform oversight functions on the emergency rule in Rivers state. The newspaper says the federal government has kicked off the reconstruction of the 770-kilometre Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano highway.
