Newspaper Headlines: Bloody fights as Nigerians throw punches over palliatives across states

Reports that the federal government has increased the salaries for staff of all federal tertiary institutions in the country, and the abduction of twenty-four students from a university in Zamfara, dominate the front pages today. 

Punch reports that some members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Executive Committee (NEC) have confirmed that Nyesom Wike, minister of the federal capital territory, notified the party’s leadership before accepting to serve in President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet. The newspaper highlights how some Nigerians have turned the palliative-sharing grounds in their states to battlefields as they struggle to collect their share.
Tribune says operatives of the joint task force, Operation Hadarin-Daji, have rescued six female students of the twenty-four students abducted from the federal university of Gusau in Zamfara. The newspaper reports that the house of representatives will resume its first legislative year of the 10th Assembly on Tuesday, September, 26.
The Nation reports that Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the governor of Lagos, has hinted at the possible restoration of the state-wide monthly sanitation exercise. The newspaper says the Lagos house of assembly has revealed that Abayomi Baiyewu, the doctor who operated on the late boy with missing intestines, was not a certified surgeon.
The Guardian says that members of the armed forces have neutralised 52 terrorists, arrested 53 criminals, 7 suspected oil thieves and rescued 61 kidnapped hostages in one week. The newspaper reports the police as saying that rumours of the disappearance of male organs in the FCT are false.
Independent spotlights Nigeria’s power sector after 10 years of privatisation. The newspaper says stakeholders in the politics of Edo have called for an open campaign in the 2024 gover­norship election in the state, rather than ceding the seat to a certain zone.
