Newspaper Headlines: APC council chairmanship aspirant hacked to death in Lagos

The defection of Nasir el-Rufai, a former governor of Kaduna, to the Social Democratic Party (SDP), dominates the frontpages.

The Punch reports that the presidency and the All Progressives Congress (APC) have dismissed moves by el-Rufai to galvanise opposition figures towards unseating President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 election. The newspaper says gunmen have shot Oluwatosin Onamade, aspirant for the chairmanship position of Ijede LCDA in the Ikorodu area of Lagos, to death. 
THISDAY reports that Atiku Bagudu, the minister of budget and economic planning, said the federal government has adhered to the legal borrowing limit of five percent from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) despite challenges in the domestic and global economic environment. The newspaper says the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited has started fresh negotiations with the Dangote Petroleum Refinery over the renewal of the naira-for-crude agreement.

 

Nigerian Tribune reports that at least 20 people have been confirmed dead in four communities in Akure north LGA of Ondo state after gunmen invaded the areas. The newspaper says Oby Ezekwesili, former minister of education, has urged Senate President Godswill Akpabio to step aside until an investigation into Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s sexual allegations against him is completed.
Guardian reports that the 50 percent tariff hike in telecommunication services has been exacerbated by data depletion and poor quality internet service. The newspaper says the federal government has approved a $1 billion facility to support the 36 states of the federation to tackle the challenge of child-maternal mortality in the country.
